Identify the deck you are using
A complete tarot deck has 78 cards: 22 major and 56 minor arcana. In Rider-Waite-Smith, Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles organize the minors. An oracle follows its creator’s rules, so its card count, images and vocabulary vary. Read its guidebook before applying tarot meanings to it.
Read a card in three steps
First describe what you see without interpreting it: a figure, object or movement. Then add a keyword from the deck’s guide. Finally connect that word to your question. The scales in Justice, for example, may invite you to compare commitments; they cannot predict a court decision.
Move to three cards and keep a record
Choose positions before drawing, such as past, present and possible future. Write a sentence for each card and one that connects them. Separate what the images suggest from facts you know. Reread your note a few days later without rewriting the original interpretation.
